Architects and Interior specialists First Principles had been engaged by Bethlehem Baptist Church (BBC), and having worked on a
previous project with co-owner Kate, Juliet from our team was stoked to collaborate again with her on BBC’s new fitout.
Modern Office took the design lead from Kate at First Principles with their vision to create a multi functional space with a home away from home feeling.
BBC wanted multifunctional spaces that lended themselves to collaboration, quiet and focused work or just a communal space to sit back with a coffee. They also wanted an uplifting space, from what is traditionally a conservative one to a more modern space that has colour and soft furnishings to give that feeling of comfort. In contrast however, they wanted to ensure their new chapel was tranquil with light tones.
A combination of leaner tables, colourful high stools, cafe tables with easy to wipe cafe chairs and a range of soft seating from
couches, single chairs and ottomans achieved the casual and friendly feel they desired. Modella leaner tables with raw Birch Ply Naturale
Melteca tops and black frames in the communal space tied in with the cafe tables giving a sense of cohesiveness. To remain within budget,
we were able to repurpose their existing cafe table frames and change
the tops to match the leaner tables. Matching mobile planters allow for the space to be reconfigured.
With the use of heavy duty commercial grade soft seating like the Shanghai, Trento and Amelia seating all upholstered in Warwick
fabrics, we were able to tie these pieces in to complement the carpet colors. Modern Office’s own Maxwell seating gave a sense of
coziness in the quiet room.
