As Modern Office celebrates its 15th birthday this month, we’re taking some time to reflect on the journey and how far we’ve come. From one of our earliest projects 14 years ago to working with the same client again recently, we’re proud of our achievements and look forward to the next 15 years!

14 years ago, Modern Office was given the opportunity to complete a fit out for Vulcan Steel. This was a pivotal project to work on by our Directors David and Adam as they were starting out on their journey in the office furniture and fitout industry.

The boys worked hard and were proud to complete the job for Vulcan (formerly known as NZ Profiles) with desking that was state of the art for the time, and the work done certainly future proofed Vulcan’s space for the next 14 years. However with a growing team, Vulcan recently needed additional desks for their existing workspace. The initial installation that we did must have made an impression, as we were stoked to be given another opportunity to work with them 14 years later!

Vulcan Steel’s brief this time around was to modernise the space and add additional desks to the same footprint. Their existing corner desks took up space in their office and with the need for additional desks Vulcan asked us to work with them again to find the right solution.

After an initial consultation with our BDM Juliet Scott, rendered floor plans were completed and the fine tuning of these resulted in a functional, future proofed space. By replacing corner workstations with straight desks we were able to increase the number of staff so their space could be maximised.


The new look of Vulcan Steel

Vulcan Steel wanted to lighten the space and more often than not, white tops for desking are used for this purpose. However, based on the nature of their business, metals distributor and processor, it would have been a struggle to keep marks off white tops so we went with Melteca Silver Strata - white with a fine texture that is a lot more forgiving but still light and bright. These desktops teamed with fixed height Novah desks with black frames lightened the space; the use of personal storage units between the desks gave staff members their own storage but also created separation between desks. Screen dividers in the blue of Vulcan’s brand offered acoustic benefits and added colour to the space.

What’s resulted is a clean and fresh looking office space that is on brand and functional for their team.
